Artist's Comments

It was late in Scar's reign. It had become clear to the lionesses that he didn't understand the definition of "moderation". Ever since he took control, he had pushed the lionesses to hunt prey in overwhelming amounts. Scar obviously wanted his hyena supporters to live in luxury and excess. Afterall, happy hyenas were loyal hyenas.

The sudden surge in predation had unnerved most of the animals in the Pridelands. In conjunction with a drought that had occured at roughly the same time, the pressure to find more hospitable grounds had compelled most of the animals to leave. Those that chose to stay were soon hunted down by the overworked lionesses.

As Sarabi layed on Pride Rock staring into the star-filled sky, she lamented at how things had changed so much since Mufasa's death. As the queen breathed a sigh, she then heard footsteps coming up from behind her.

It was Shenzi.

The two of them weren't friends. Not by a long shot. They rarely even called one-another by name. "Lion" and "hyena" usually sufficed as the terms of choice. But for now at least, they were no longer enemies. They typically ignored each other. Perhaps that was for the best; their personalities weren't compatible in the least.

The hyena matriach walked over and sat near the edge of the rock face, pretending not to notice the lion sitting several meters away. Shenzi was having the same thoughts as her lioness counterpart; what had once been a welcome paradise at the start of Scar's reign was now going to ruin. She fumed because she knew that she couldn't dare question her king about his ruling methods. His short temper and one-track mind made him impossible to debate with.

Defying the usual trend of things, Sarabi unexpectedly broke the silence, "This land has seen better days. Surely you can see this as well." Shenzi peered towards the queen, but held silent for a moment. Although she agreed with Sarabi, she didn't care to start a conversation with her. Consequently, she gave only a short reply, "Ain't that the truth..."

The hyena then stood up and returned to the main chamber of Pride Rock. Maybe Scar would wake up and see what he has done and amend his strategy. Shenzi knew that it was an empty hope, though. She could only hope that the next day would bring more food than there was today.

Sarabi and Shenzi are (c) Disney.

Great story behind this! I wish more of the secondary characters would be explored. This would have been a great scene to see in the movie. Well done!

Nicely done, the text sets a good mood for the picture. All of that was done in Paint.NET?

What a time to be used, but of course Scar was always the 'friend' of the Hyenas, bringing dark times to both group was his job almost, awesome picture.

Thank you.

I did the main drawing on paper first. After scanning it and making a few minor alterations to the sketch in MS Paint, I put it in Paint.NET. All of the coloring and such was done in Paint.NET.
